Is it possible to jump from a 520 to a 620 over a 3-5 month time? Here is our situation...We want to buy a house in Sept. My fiance had defaults out the wazoo! and tons of medical bills. Over the past 10 months we have been paying off as much as we could. This month is our 9th consecutive payment for student loans (which will be out of default this month). He had a $5k auto default which I have worked out with the bank and after this month we will be out of default.

Everything will be paid current or paid off (accept about $5k in medical bills which our mortgage broker said they can try and work around).
We also just got him a credit card (only $200 limit but we had to start somewhere).

I feel we have done everything we could have (short of paying everything off and getting the credit card a little sooner).

Do we even have a shot at gettting a pre-approval for a mortgage next month?

Thank you for your help!

Great points. The reality is I'd prefer that all of us pay bills online. Most people reading this have broadband, so they have the ability to pay most of your bills online. People who pay online are probably late less often too. I know online banking customers suffer smaller losses if hit with identity theft. That's because they are staying on top of their cards better.

Making your own envelopes to send payments to a credit card company is not a good idea. Credit card companies use an automated system with a bar code reader, hence the clear area on the return envelope. If you use a regular envelope the payment may be lost, as in my case, or severly delayed. It will cost you money to cancel the check, and then if the check does make its way to the credit card company at a later time you will be charged a returned payment fee from them.
